Through this piece, I was able to express my feelings of nurture and parental love towards their children/anything or anyone they find precious. I used the knowledge of my previous country's practices to recreate the life from a simple bean. I also made use of my parent's familiarity with the project and process. I provided the beans with the necessary ingredients to grow itself and become beautiful on its own. |
Meaning of Art Piece
The meaning behind the growth of the bean is obviously nurture, which is the title of this piece. I tried to recreate life and show that without nurture and taking care of something, it will not grow to be the best it can be. Such as this project, I didn't take much care of it, I would soak it and overfill it with water, which is good for it by the way, and place it in the designated area, and would leave it again till night, which is when I check up on it and jot down the process and evolution. It's meaning is also to depict that the amount of attention people show to their loved ones affects them long-term. Such as this project, I used this as an example in how people are turning out within our society. It could be prevented by the caregivers, however, they do not act with all their power to prevent the sad outcome their children become. In my project, one of the chickpeas had grown strong and tall while another merely ended up rotting and melting through the cotton, and that was because of where I placed them and the environment they had surrounding them.
This can be taken literally in the real world. My project is not really the best and there's no scientific proof as to why one turned out better than the other, but it's fine to assume in this case. After all, they're the same thing, they're all chickpeas that would end up evolving the way of the manipulators ideas and imagination.

Artist Inspiration
There was not an artist or an art movement which I tool my project from, however, I did take it from one of the practices of education in the middle east. They would have their grade school kids grow chickpeas by laying cotton beneath it and feeding it water consistently so as to not dry out and keeps absorbing in order to detach from its dry body.
This method can be used on any sorts of beans/seeds, which you can see in the image are lentil seeds. I later came to know that this was also known to other countries and also provided them to the kids to experiment and evolve them which was pretty cool. Although, my project turned out a disaster, since I had no earned the results I was working for, I still depicted the work of growing something. |
Process
Step 1: Sketch the ideas that come to your head, whatever it may be.
|
Step 2: Gather all the tools and products needed to construct your project.
|
Step 3: Lastly, begin photographing the process. Try to take one picture in the morning and one at night everyday until you see major and satisfying results.

Reflection
In the beginning of this project, I had so much time to think about many possible things to be done, however, I had no idea what I wanted to do or create, which is very normal. I wanted to construct something that would astound whoever came upon it, knowing me, I probably wouldn't have been able to do that. I came upon many ideas, although, all of them were too tough to shape. Therefore, I ended up creating the project I have presented upon this page.
It wasn't very hard to create and nurture these chickpeas, however, the first batch I tried to grow turned out very bad, I had left them to absorb too much of the sunlight, therefore, killed it off. It began forming pits that turned black, and the beans began smelling pretty badly. I hated going near it because it gave off the smell of death and it also attracted many bugs, and it also turned the cotton to a nasty brownish orange hued color, all in all, I hated it and it disgusted me greatly. But then my parents encouraged me to try and grow another batch with less chickpeas than before and to change the placement of the beans, to keep it away from the sunlight. Thankfully, it worked.
My second batch turned out great. It began growing at a very fast rate, I took pictures during the morning and night, and it was showing surprising rate of growth.
Some side effects, the plant exuded an extremely disgusting smell, and the chickpeas ended up melting with the cotton, it was a disgusting experience. Although, one of the chickpeas was able to grow tremendously and have it's roots connect to all the other chickpeas roots who had just sprouted. If I had thought of this idea from a long time ago, I would have gave it more time to grow bigger and much more beautiful, but I procrastinated too much and the smell would've probably killed me. I saw a very big change in the second one when I decided to place it in a bit dusty electrical cords area, it had light but not too much, and there wasn't any sunlight which was perfect, because it would've died again.
Finally, I am glad to have gotten rid of it because the amount of bugs it attracted almost made my house the hanging out among teen bugs.
