This painting was created to illustrate love, it may not have been the best representation, however, it is depicts the feelings one feels when they fall through the pit called love. I used acrylic to paint the skin and the red sort of background/shirt was also painted with oil, as for the cotton candy background color was created with acrylic. This image was taken from another artist, however, I have added a few things to it adopt it.

Meaning of the Art Work
This art piece portrays love on certain levels. When a girl or a guy falls in love, they feel a surge of emotions and sentiments that flows into their body and takes control of the beat of their heart. The sudden flow of adrenaline and the energy and the squeeze of the heart is an addicting feeling that is wanted to be felt by any person. This painting depicts the beauty of love and the heart that contains love. It may also contain the envy and jealousy by other people for not experiencing these sentiments. And it may not even be love necessarily, it may be a simple crush or a sexual attraction that you feel right when you see someone or when you learn about their hobbies and likes/dislikes. Once you feel a connection to said person, then that's when you began wanting to have that person for yourself. You would feel very good about yourself to have someone that you admire so much, admire you in the same or like degree.
Having a crush is nothing serious, although the feelings you do get are extremely intense, which in fact, the level of feelings you contain towards someone is equal to the level of the brain of someone that lives in a mental asylum. This is prove that love drives people insane and it truly isn't safe to mess with. Although, it is extremely fun to be involved in the feeling and anticipating what could happen.
I could talk on and on about love, although I have no experience, however, it feels amazing just simply thinking about someone and trying to decipher their personality and exactly how well you guys could create a successful future together.
Another meaning I decided to implement within my artwork a little before completion is twisted love. Red stands for love, fire, anger, and passion, but it could also stand for horror. I chose the idea of twisted love. I thought the painting looked like an image from a horror movie, however, the fact that it's about love gave me the idea turn it into a twisted kind of love story. There are many people out there that have a sudden crush on another person, and some of those people take it to the extreme, such as stalking, etc.
This painting I decided to portray s the suffocating sort of love, one you feel very confused in and cannot control how you feel and where to begin to get rid of or solving it. It's the sort of love that turns you into the craziest person possible, the love that shies you away from your own life, the one that completely destroys you. Thus is love, it isn't kind to all.

Artist Inspiration
I was inspired by René Magritte's The lovers, mainly because their love looks restrained. It looks as if they're hiding their feelings and actions of love from everyone, thus making it a secret relationship. I am very attracted to the concept of defying the odds and doing something no one expected you or wanted you to do. This painting portraits something that perhaps no one knew about, something forbidden and kept secret for their own safety. I feel a connection to this painting on a spiritual level. They are willing to inhibit this appearance of anonymous in order for them to depict this sensual feeling.
The painting contains shadows over the wrap over the head that gives it an eerie appearance of death soon after they commit their act, it looks like a noose, that would bring them to their downfall after committing this act. It may not seem forbidden because everyone has the right to pursue love, and live their life in happiness, not everyone has a public right to it. These lovers can be in a major situation that can send them to the afterlife.

ACT Questions
1. I was able to identify the cause-effect relationship between my inspiration and it's affect on my artwork by the appearance of the images within the paintings. I created an image of the torso that was similar to the inspiration by Magritte. Which was to illustrate the sexual desire caused by love, or even the absence of sexual desires that surrenders love to merely sentiments.
2. The author of my inspiration had a different meaning to his pieces rather than my meaning of love. He claims that it is merely a mystery and mysterious are unsolved because they have no meaning, thus leaving it to the unknown. However, regarding my theme of love, in the second photo, he uses a woman's torso and lower body to represent women and perhaps to show how subjective they were.
3. While researching my topic, I have discovered that my artwork was a very measly representation of love. Love being one of the most important concepts in art and in any culture and everyday life throughout the whole world, not many people can actually illustrate it and receive positive feedback such as others carrying the same often burdening feeling.
4. The central idea around my inspiration was obviously love. I wanted to discover images of intricate designs that portrayed love, however, was more attracted to the mysterious, grotesque aspect that I found in the surrealism movement. The mystery mixed with visions of dreamy like state of objects, thus causing love to fall into the category of a dream like state that contains horror, yet a strong dopamine doze that would leave anyone craving for more.
5. After reading my research, I decided to create love of dreamlike, mystery state. Not knowing what actual love is, this painting I've decided to keep it as an unfinished piece, something that will never finish because love is always changing, thus, no actual final form.

Process
Step 1 - Create sketches of what you think love looks like. You will get images that look nothing like love but it looks like love to you. That's totally fine because you will get an idea out of all those ideas that truly look like love to you and to the viewer. Another tip that I utilize all the time is making use of the internet. Go on google or pinterest, and you will more than likely be able to utilize one of the pictures you find or you can also sketch many more ideas that you get. Often times, none of the pictures will appeal to you, and you'll end up creating something completely different with the project. In my case, the painting.
ExperimentationStep 4 - After you've painted the parts you were very sure how you wanted to look like, begin experimenting with the other parts that you weren't so sure about. You won't have many paintings that will confuse you. This was the first ever painting that I had no idea what to do with, thus, it turned out pretty crappy. I hated how mine turned out, thus, you have to be cautious over what you're dealing with. If you were not very sure what you wanted to include, choose colors that is very familiar to the theme you've chosen. In my case, I chose red for love, although it looks more like a horror story.
|
Step 2 - Having chosen our artistic drawing piece that we would implement on the canvas, create a background color for the painting that you feel is appropriate to the theme you've chosen. I chose a cotton colored candy color because I believe love is similar to cotton candy, so mixed with colors and excitement. Also, you will most likely choose a color and paint it, however, when it's time to project the art piece upon the canvas, you change your mind on the background color and will think that it is not suitable to the theme. It happens to everyone, and often times, it is too late for me to go back and change the color as I've already gone too far and it would most likely mess up the rest of my painting. So, you gotta stick with what you've got.
Step 3 - Begin painting your painting. Try to paint the parts that you think you have a shot at getting a very nice appearance. Because if you paint parts that you were unsure of how it should look, it will turn out not as well as you've thought it would be. Thus, paint the smaller, distinguishable parts that you think you have a shot at making look the best you can. DO NOT paint parts that you're unsure of, it will turn out terrible, just like my painting did! Honestly, I love how I made the skin look like, I thought it appeared fairly realistic, and well enough to appear on a painting. This is an example of knowing what you're doing and where you're going with this painting.
Reflection The theme of my painting is love, although, I have to be honest and say that the painting looks like a horror story. At first I knew exactly what I was doing, or at least I thought I knew what I was doing, but after painting the parts I was very comfortable with, I had no idea what to do with the background areas that I decided to splosh a color that I thought seemed like love, but turns out to be very weird and grotesque in my opinion.
I had no trouble creating the canvas and gessoing it, it was a pretty smooth process as always, practice makes perfect, as a result from my other previous paintings. |
After gessoing I had created a background color that would match my theme, cotton candy color. It's array of mixed colors of pink, red, and blue gave the perfect combination of the mixed sentiments that one has when they go through the process of love, or attraction as it shares the same or similar feelings.
Then I proceeded to draw the chosen picture with the utilization of a projector, to aid in depicting a more accurate picture of what I wanted to portray rather than an unsure picture with a bad quality art. That was when I began painting, at first, having thought everything has been figured out, and creating a skin tone I thought rivaled my other pieces or even looked a lot better. My confidence was going up, thinking I was going to make a beautiful painting, until I came upon the area on top of the torso and the background. I had no idea what I was doing when I began sploshing colors to fill the void. I wanted the person to appear as if they did not have any sexual parts, however, it seems as if she has an underwear on, which she doesn't. The red color makes it seem like blood, and when it is placed near the lower area of her body, it depicts the bloody period of a woman, but in reality it has nothing to do with that.
I had a ton of trouble with this painting, although I was able to complete it within a day, It does not look very good. One of the worst paintings I've ever created. I also created the hair, however, did not like how it turned out because I did not put much effort into making it appear as realistic as possible.
Based upon some people that have viewed my art, it seems nothing about love, it would be the very last thing they'd think about while viewing this piece. To my younger sister, it appears to be a horror image of a woman suffocating and bleeding to death, it really isn't though.
I don't believe people get the theme of the painting once they view it, perhaps when they get to read it's meaning they'll be able to relate it to love a little more.
Now that I think about it, pink might've been a way better choice for the theme of love, as it seems more suitable. Next time I create a painting or an art project with the theme of love, I will not paint or create anything that looks like a grotesque story, as love does not pull to that direction.
