"Genie Lamp"
|
Meaning of the Piece
The story that gave rise to the myth, Alladin and the Magic Lamp from the famous Arabian Nights, the genie lamp bears the traces of old age, indicating that its origins are lost in the darkness of time. The genie that inhibits the lamp can and will only listen to the lamp owner, which indicates that great power is not something seen alongside the common hands. The meaning behind this lamp is that it contains the dreams of the world. A genie is a spirit or imaginary creature that will appear when you rub a magic lamp and grant wishes. Within my culture, it is sacred and looked upon as something that'd make your dream come true: living in luxury, gaining what you've always wanted, happiness, and fame. Although, that is it's meaning to the rest of the world, It is also an object wished by many to be brought about by the world, however, it resides in fantasy, never to be contaminated. A genie lamp can take any shapes and sizes, it is after all, within one's own mind and power of imagination. Within the minds of many, the genie lamp is nothing but a fantasy, therefore, one shouldn't put their minds, hopes, and believes within it and later be disappointed.
Although the story of the Magic Lamp is nothing but a fantasy, and one cannot grant their wishes conveniently without much raise of a hand, one has the power to be a genie that grants wishes to those whom they love or those who are in need. You do not have to have a genie to grant your wishes to be a happy person, after all, granting the wishes of those in need bring more than happiness.

Step 1 - Sketch any ideas that slips through your mind, anything you find sacred and holds something to you. Make sure to have at least five, and sketch something that means something to you, not just anything you see.
|
Step 2 - Gather all needed materials to create your specified sacred vessel. Make sure to keep your tools clean and thoughts organized, be patient, sometimes clay can be tough to manipulate, however, it contains many possibilities.

Reflection I dislike this project very much. I disliked the medium, I disliked the process and the creation of it all. I was originally going to create flowers since I really love flowers and everything about their shapes and colors. I decided to change it with my moms explanation of the cultural impact and meaning that it holds and means to the people that hold dreams remaining unfulfilled.
To be very honest, I had no clue what I was doing, I spent so many class periods creating and at the end I would destroy it being dissatisfied with everything that I've done and basically everything That I was planning. Although I despised working on this project, It was a good experience and a heads up of my strengths and weaknesses. |
Creating clayStep 3 - Once you have all your tools together, the first thing you want to do is create your clay, since we've been provided with all types of clay and tools, we are able to form enough clay for our designated idea.

At the very end of the piece, I began giving up, therefore, I left it colorless and boring looking. I do regret not trying harder to make it look more presentable, because with the way I see it, It looks awful and is the ugliest thing I have ever created. Not to offend any clay lovers or anyone that enjoys creating with clay. It does not fit with me. Although I have no problem with getting dirty since I love painting and I usually do not notice when paint coats my clothing, I do not enjoy clay at all!
I had help creating my clay, kind of, because I was in a group and we aided each other and the amount given to each member. I also had my mothers help with the shaping of the lamp, I wasn't getting certain shapes in the right place, thus, I sought the help of my mother since she was more skilled than I was with such mediums, and I try to modify certain parts in order to be able to say that I was the one who created it.
Before beginning any sort of process, I wedged the clay piece to rid of any air bubbles trapped within the clay. I used the technique slip and score to attach each clay piece together and in order for it to stay put together strongly and not to blow up in the kiln. That was most of what I had done to create my piece, I tried to manipulate the shape through my the use of my fingers, and I can honestly say that, that was the worst thing I've ever created in my whole life. I have so many regrets. one of them is that I should've sand papered the lamp and gave it a smoother look than the weird finger print looking shapes.
