Meaning of the Piece
The meaning for this project is not as deep as every other project I've created. I decided to make this piece in order to test my thought process and potential towards clothing designs, to experiment with my ideas. I began this project with the thought of observing my skills and how I'd appear as a designer. I was disappointed after all. I created a skirt that is half an inch shorter than knee length, the fabric is one that can stand on it's own without any other designs incorporated into it. It has a stretch to it yet is inflexible. The upper maroon layer emits warmth and is formed with an intricate design. The meaning behind my clothing can take another turn. For example, as I designed the skirt, I created a black almost knee length skirt right underneath the warm maroon fabric. This portrays a personality hidden from discovery, or it's used to enhance the beauty of the outer late. It can contain malice feelings, yet no one will be able to find out due to the outer layer that covers for the inner's flaws. Although, they are merely clothes, they can also contain meanings and the hidden feelings of the designer. It portrays my feelings and disgust of people that is hidden through my outer appearnce, and my outer attitude. After removing the top layer, it will unveil the professional, unforgiving attitude.
Arist Inspiration
I was inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's designs, which had a sophisticated appearance and modest look. I could have chosen another designer to focus my art upon, however, I chose him because he creates mainly professional clothing that are worn in order to give off the image of a hard working, elegant person. I am very hung up on the idea of being elegant, womanly, modest, and most of all, fashionable. He was able to embed it all together and give it a worthy appearnce. I decided to use different sizing than what he would use, which is the 0-8 standards. I cannot follow through with such sizings, thus I went by inches rather than catogerizing it through his measurements. I decided to use my measurements; hips 38 inches, and 24 inch waist. I am never able to find my size in any clothing, thus, using my size for this design allows me reuse this project and create it as my own clothing. I have not found a skirt that is tight fitted to each individual, they all follow one body shape but has different sizes for that which does not benefit a minority of women. In my case, I always fail to find anything that fits my lower half anf my upper half in one piece. In addition to why I decided to use the color black, Karl once said, "One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a little black dress". Thus, in order to give a neat and a clean impression, one must wear black, not necessarily, it just means that this color can depict you as fashionable yet not a show off sort of feeling.
As for the top layer, I was inspired by a picture I found online while browsing asian fashion. I found a red skirt that mateched the fabric I had purchased as an upper layer for my black skirt. I believe the black is capable of standing on it's own, however, the top layer can enhance it. Although it's a little bit too heavy since the inner skirt has a layer that is too thick to place anything atop it. The image I found had a lighter feel fabric than the one I chose, which was very heavy and more of a winter vibe. It is not a skirt that can be worn in the summer, but it is a great fall outfit, it contains the maroon color that is dim and beautiful enough as a color that represents autumn. Although, I do regret utilizing this fabric since it is not light enough for me to tie it and turn it into a design knot that can be layered on top of the black piece.
ACT Questions
1) The cause and affect relationship between my artwork and inspiration is apparaent through the look and design, yet not the meaning necessarily. It had the look of the black skirt, and the similar layered design of the red skirt. Although the colors differ in value and there's a large contrast between the fabrics, it remains to embody the difference between profesionalism and fun.
2) My chosen inspiration, Karl Lagerfeld, designs clothing using mainly black, due to the believe that black contains the ability enhance ones appearance either in good or bad times. It produces neithehr a good nor a bad state of being. It tends to be neutral and portrays a fierce look of being serious, however since serious is boring, my other inspiration, Nasty Gal Brand adds a playful and eccentric feel.
3) Researching my project allowed me the chance to discover other designers, and their creation which had a very large impact upon my decision to pursue clothes making. Not necessarily as a profession, but a hobby that I'd like to continue in the future, in addition to my other artistic hobbies.
4) The central idea and theme around my design is inner thoughts and outer appearance. As one hides his thought process from others in order to portary an appearance that is most likely favored over one's true personlaity. In my case, I hate people extremely so, yet act very cheerful and kind to others. It's such a hypcritical and messed up world we live in now a days.
5) After researching my topic, I discovered that I would be able to portray the personality change through clothing because it represents a process of unveiling and latching off, a sort of displaying your personality or covering it up. An extention to that is the thickness anf thinness of the fabric, the thicker, the heavier the burden would be to shield your innermost thoughts.

Process |
Experimentation |
Step 1) Create process skteches that depict what you want to represent your theme as. However, firstly decide on a theme that may bring out the best side of you. Decide upon something that may light your passion. Then you can create sketches that may best represnt what ypu feel and what you think your theme looks as. Although I did create so many sketches, I did not recreate any of them with fabric. It may have been too difficult for me to create such work, and it may be because I would nto be able to have enough time to finish them. I wanted to create a set piece that would include a shirt and a skirt, or a shirt and pants/shorts/jeans, or perhaps a dress. I ended up sticking to creating a skirt only because of the lack of difficulty. I chose the easy way out and I regret that.
Step 3) Begin cutting up and working on your project. Since I had no idea what I was doing, I had a better resource than youtbue, my mother obviously. She knew everything there is to know about fabric and clothes, thus, I decided to get her help on mostly everything. I asked her advice on where to begin and how to cut the the sides and what to begin sewing. At first I cut the sides as round rather than leaving it into a rectangle shape in order to be able to put it together and have it lay flatly and neatly upon the hips.

Step 2) Gather all necessary materials and take measurements of the model you will be creating the clothes for. Taking th emeasurements; hips 38 inches, waist 24 inches, I did not need any other meausrements, in addition I was able to find another skirt that fit the model well enough to base the skirt upon. You may not have experience using a sowing machine, thus you've got to look up how to on youtube, and you may also want to research hoe to incorporate different type fabrics togther, and in addition to that, you may want to reaserch colors and their affect upon one another relating to clothes. I was also experimenting with different fabrics as I arrived at Jo-Ann's fabric store. There was a very wide variety of colors and fabrics, it was very difficult deciding on exactly what to choose. At first, I found a beige stretchy fabric that I could have incorporated a pink/skin tone satin color on top of it, I fell in love with the fabric, but it was too costly and my mom did not let me buy it, so I neglected the idea. There was another color I was attracted to, it was a very light purple satin color that I could have used with the beige under tone color, it would have turned out magnificently, but I ended up with a thicker fabric due to the weather of Wisconsin.

Then I folded the sides and got to worker on sewing the sides, after that, I bought a 6 inch zipper that I placed on the rear of the skirt, then I folded the waist layer of the skirt and folded it in half then sewed it to fit the waist size, I also added a button; through hand as I did not want to take a chance and accidently break the needly on the sowing machine, although they are replaceable. Towards the bottom of the skirt, I kept a slight slit in the back of a skirt however, when I shortened the skirt, the slit looked unsightly, so I decided to not have one and sewed it back together. As for the red layer skirt design, I only sewed the bottom of the 1 yard piece, giving it a frilly appearnce, ad if it was a rose taking shape.
Reflection
Working on this project gave me the pleasure of utilizing fabric and the experience fashion designers may have, in the difficulty of creating the designs and putting it into materialized form. It was difficult creating it since I've never had experience creating clothes, besides the one time I created a multidesign dress for my personal project. Having to create another cllothing was difficult in itself, thankfully I did not decide on a more difficult design to recreate.
There were difficulties and advanatges in the process of creating the skirt. I found it difficult to cut the fabric to exact centimetres, to be able to cut enough to fit the model and not too much as to ruin the size and the fabric design. That I had to keep referring to my mother about. The advantage I found was trimming and sewing the ends of the red fabric, it was very easy as I had to merely run it under the sewing machine. It ended up giving it the rose effect, that turned it into a frilly looking design.
Although, when it comes to the meaning of my piece, I don't belive people would be able to guess what it'd mean. When it comes to fabric, it can mean anything, and anything is a very large word with many possibilities, not having a specific visual to represent it may be difficult for someone to decipher.
If I were to recreate this project, I would choose not to make a skirt, rather, perhaps go a little farther and make a dress, or even create a shit, or perhaps a cardigan.
